EarthGirl Hannah Wears Vintage. Eco-Vintage!

21 November 2008 No Comment

IMPORTANT EG NOTE EarthGirl Hannah, what makes you an EarthGirl?
I take as little from the planet as possible, repair things to keep them in circulation and make jewellery and bags out of old things. I do this for myself and for my job running Lottie Bogotti, my antique, vintage and eco-friendly shop in Ibiza. I practice what I preach….mostly!

When did you become aware and fall in love with our planet and what did you do next?
When I left England to live in Ibiza it struck me how commercialised life had been and how addicted all of us are in the UK to spending money on things we really don’t need. Once I realised how damaging it is to buy so much unwanted junk from far off lands, I set about creating my eco-friendly shop.

What do you think is a simple change anyone can make to be more green?
Shedding the ’sets’ mentality and aiming for originality. Buy odd but oddly matching crockery in charity shops rather than brand new sets that all too soon become incomplete and therefore unwanted sets. The same goes for cuttlery, towels, bedding and clothes. Mix and match your way to your own unique style and don’t buy what the high street compells you to buy.

What eco-aware product do you use or wear regularly?
My wardrobe is almost entirely second hand or vintage, apart from my underwear of course! I never buy new jewellery or cheap fashion bags. I have some lovely bags and all were bought second hand. I love going out at night wearing something unique or carrying a little antique bag as I am daring to be different and that, I think, is such a healthy way to be in this homogenised world.

Picture this, you’re trapped on an island, with a tree that only grows one product. What is it?
My homemade wholemeal bread with seeds and a good crust. (Sounds delicious, Hannah.)

What are your daily earth-friendly actions?
I run the tap slowly when washing my face and switch it on and off while brushing my teeth. I don’t wash my hair every day and rarely use a hairdryer. I very rarely use aerosols. I re-use carrier bags for rubbish or nappies. When I don’t need them for nappy bags anymore I will go to the shops with a basket. I switch lights off when not needed and don’t watch a lot of TV. I often walk to collect my daughter from school and walk to my local shops. In my shop, I re-use bubble wrap and ask customers if they need a bag for their goods rather than just assume they need one.

Are you working on anything that we should know about that’s positively impacting our planet and its people?
I am raising awareness of several issues regarding ‘buying new’. What are the social, economic, environmental and human costs of our obsession with buying loads of new things that do not last and end up in land fill sites? I have many videos on my website.

IMPORTANT EG NOTE Make a wish! (Something. Anything.)
I wish people would start to have a concience and try to feel some empathy for the children kidnapped in China to work in sweatshops, the children with torn hands plucking cotton in Afghanistan, the adult men killed in gold mines in South Africa, the people who lose their jobs in the West due to our refusal to put quality before price, the people poisoned by polluted water due to the intensive and poorly regulated manufacturing of goods we really do not need.

Do EarthGirlz really have more fun?
I have a clear conscience and no amount of money can lighten your mood as much as that. So yes, EarthGirlz have more fun but they also have more responsibility as they are the ones who have to wake others up.

What Kooky or interesting fun-facts should our viewers know about you?
I can flutter my eye lashes at an astonishing rate. I used to have a shop when I was a small girl; a corner cupboard in my bedroom selling jewellery I’d made out of Fimo clay; nothing sold then though!

IMPORTANT EG NOTE Hannah’s website is www.lottiebogotti.com. Check out how unique her store is. Tons of fabulous stuff for guys and gals, great vintage jewelry, bags and purses. Everything you need to be a hip eco-chick or chico.
