EarthGirl Sandy, what makes you an EarthGirl?
My DNA baby!
When did you become aware and fall in love with our planet and what did you do next?
This is an excellent question. As a child you couldn’t shake me out of tree’s, stop me from trekking up a mountainside, or tear me away from the horny toads, stray dogs, or abandon baby birds I would happen upon. I was one with nature. As an adult, after my father passed away, I retreated to Costa Rica, to a safe haven called Punta Mona. A 85 acre organic farm and eco-school nestled in the tropics on the border of Costa Rica and Panama. It was there in the lush abundance of the tropics that I became aware of how deeply I loved and needed the healing purity of the planet; to rest in, to renew myself within. Nature restored and freed my heart from the crushing sense of loss I felt. And I love her for that.
What do you think is a simple change anyone can make to be more eco-friendly?
Grow a garden!!!!
What earth-friendly product do you use or wear regularly?
I down load music for a good cause at http://www.planetwize.com.
Picture this, you’re trapped on an island, with a tree that only grows one product. What is it?
Besides an Earth Boy Prince, hmmmmm? I know -would like my special tree to produce fresh water that I can turn on and off like a shower. Cold water in the mornings, and hot water at night. When I lived on the Abracadabra Farm in Brazil fazenda.abracadabra.over-blog.com – we boiled water over a fire every night before bed and bathed with homemade soap. To this day I appreciate EVERY drop of hot water that hits my body while showering.
What are your daily earth-friendly actions?
I use eco – friendly products, I walk or car pool to get around, I eat 90 % veggie diet and buy locally grown food as often as possible.
I turn off electrical appliances when not in use, I have a few outfits I wear around the house during the week which keep my laundry loads extremely light, I don’t buy crap I don’t need, I re-use foil and plastic baggies and containers, I recycle, I plant gardens, I share eco-friendly info and support eco-friendly companies with my purchasing choices and donations.
Are you working on anything that we should know about that’s positively impacting our planet and its people?
I am a musician – I sing conscious music with my brother Sab. With our music and life force I work to raise awareness and financial support for St. Jude Children’s Home, www.re-generation.us and www.greenbeltmovement.org.
Make a wish!
All my wishes are already coming true – so I guess I will wish for the continued success and positive impact of EarthGirlz! (Thank you, EarthGirl Sandy, for the positive vibes!)

Absafreakinlutely. Hehehe!
What Kooky or interesting fun-facts should our viewers know about you?
I make squealing noises and wiggle my body when I’m really happy – like when the Phoenix Suns beat the Lakers in the play-offs!![]()
You can obviously see why we picked Sandy to join our extraordinary group of women. Well, she also volunteered in Gulu Uganda at the St. Jude Children’s home working with children affected by the civil war led by Joseph Kony rebels. She taught the children to write short stories, and created permaculture gardens at the orphanage and the Lacor hospital.
Earthgirl Sandy and her brother Sab (sabtheartist.com) wrote a song for the Invisible Children (http://www.invisiblechildren.com). You can watch the video here!
Sandy and Sab will be going on their AWFUL TRUTH TOUR to 40 cities in the US and Canada starting JUNE 22.
EarthGirlz asked Sandy a few more questions about herself. Here are her responses:
What, from your past, continues to motivate or inspire you?
My connection to my family inspires me most. I was recently reunited with many of my biological family members, both my parents and six siblings. The fact that over 20 years of separation couldn’t break the bond we all share, even though we’re all scattered across the the country is a miracle. Today we are extremely close, and the more I get to know each one of them, the more I appreciate them, life, myself, and the potential each day carries.
Another thing that inspires me greatly are the children from St. Jude Children’s home, and throughout the region of southern Sudan and Northern Uganda. I had the privilege to travel to Gulu and work at St. Judes, I mostly played with the children while I researched for a fantasy novel I am writing about an Acholi orphan. I taught a class on writing short stories, and I helped create a permaculture garden at the home and the local hospital.
The memory that gives me the most inspiration is when I visited a camp where children who had escaped from the rebel army lived. I walked around their campus reading inspirational signs and scripture they had written. Then I peeked through a doorway to see where they slept. I saw rows and rows of bunk beds, nothing more. Behind me I heard a tapping sound on a window. Two little girls looked out at me and motioned me to come to their room. Maraide, a young Irish teacher was with me. We entered the room and soon, about twelve girls ranging from about 7 years old to 17, were huddled around us. All of the girls were extremely friendly, their smiles were radiant. Suddenly they started singing . . . and I was overcome with emotion. Their sweetness and joyful nature was astonishing when I considered what each one of them had been exposed to from rebel slaves and in the harsh conditions of the bush. The human spirit is shone extraordinarily in them, it melted my heart and I vowed to help them that day. The children are my strongest motivating factor.
Recommend a song for us, and what can we play it to?
I studied non-profit management and film production in college because I wanted to use the media as a platform to inspire, empower, and entertain the world. During the summers I interned in L.A. for Ricky Clay productions and made low budget music videos. On the side, I worked for Greenpeace. It was during that time that I realized my path. Greenpeace taught me how crucial it is for us to protect Mother Nature. Musicians have a responsibility to create edifying music for young people.
Today I make hip-hop music with my brother Sab, our music blends feel-good vibes with conscious thoughts. I would recommend listening to our song Sun Beam. We wrote this shortly after I got back from volunteering with the children affected by the civil war in Uganda. Many of the children had been forced to become child soldiers because of a civil war funded by greedy oil companies and their associates. I would suggest listening to this song while surfing down a powder white mountain, I like to imagine the children free and happy when I sing the chorus, “I’m a sunbeam baby yeah . . .”
What’s your favorite sustainable snack that we must try?
Strawberries from my garden. They aren’t as big as the organic one’s from the Whole Foods, but they taste sweeter to me.![]()
